Traditional Orthodontic Treatment for Reliable Results
Braces are an economical, durable, and time-tested method for addressing tooth misalignments and improving oral function. They can resolve a wide range of orthodontic conditions from mild to complex.
For all of these reasons, they can be a great treatment option for kids.
Most kids who require orthodontic intervention to correct misaligned teeth or jaws will begin treatment with braces between the ages of 11 and 13, once all their permanent teeth have grown in.
In rare cases, children as young as seven may be candidates for braces. We use braces with baby teeth only when necessary to create the space for adult teeth to erupt in the proper positions, correct crossbites, or address certain functional issues.
Consultations & Monitoring for Children
We recommend scheduling your child's first orthodontic evaluation when they reach age seven. This visit will give us an opportunity to determine if any orthodontic treatment is needed. If it is, we can commence with a treatment plan. If not, we offer complimentary assessment appointments every six to 12 months until your child is ready for comprehensive orthodontic care.
Features of Braces for Kids
If you are considering braces for your child, it's important to know how braces have changed since you were a kid. Today's braces are:
More Efficient
Recent innovations in orthodontic science mean that braces are now more efficient at correcting misalignments than in the past. That translates to shorter treatment times than ever before.
More Streamlined
In the past, braces were often bulky, sharp, and accompanied by headgear. Today, metal braces are much smaller and lighter, designed with comfort and effectiveness in mind. An additional bonus is that modern braces typically only need to be adjusted every four to six weeks!
More Fun
Children's braces can actually be fun. Although they do affect the appearance of the smile during treatment, many of our young patients look forward to choosing the next colour for their braces' elastics. Some even like to choose a mixture of colours for extra pizazz.
Braces at Westview Orthodontics
Orthodontic braces traditionally straighten teeth using a combination of brackets, elastic bands, and wires.
But today's braces are not the clunky, uncomfortable face-full-of-metal that you might be picturing from decades ago. Modern braces are more streamlined and more comfortable than ever before.
